The Anatomy of a Scent: Top, Heart & Base Notes

A fine fragrance is built like a piece of music — it changes over time. The notes you smell in the first few minutes, the "top notes," are light and volatile: citrus, light spice, aromatic herbs. They introduce the fragrance and then fade within fifteen to thirty minutes.

Underneath, the "heart notes" — usually florals, spices, or fruit — form the body of the composition and last for several hours. Finally, the "base notes" — woods, musks, resins, amber — emerge last and linger longest, often for the rest of the day.
